Passing of former cricketer Desmond Dharmarajah
Former Peterite cricketer Desmond Dharmarajah passed away in Sri Lanka earlier this week.
Desmond was an economical medium-pace bowler who opened the attack with speedster Anton Perera in 1958 and 1959. He played in both big matches and although he did not take a wicket he kept one end tight with accurate swing bowling.
In 1958, Desmond played under Russel Duckworth who struck a fine 109, and aided by 72 from Brian Seneviratne and 89 from Premasiri Athukorale St Peter’s scored 314 for 5 in the first innings.
In 1959, the Peterites were captained by Brian Seneviratne and the feature of the drawn game was 16-year-old spinner Tyrone Le Mercier’s match bag of 8 for 56.
Others who played alongside Desmond in the two years were David Muthumani, Nihal Wijesena, Darrel D’ Silva, Jayantha Fernando, Brian Seneviratne, Russel Duckworth, Lakshman Serasinghe, Premasiri Athukorale, Christie Marthalingam, Anton Perera, Richard Alles, Mark de Silva, Randy Layman, Richard Heyn, Tyrone Le Mercier, Adiel Anghie and Elmo Gunasekara.
Desmond’s funeral will be held today (October 8, 2015), with a service at 3.30pm at A F Raymond’s Funeral Parlour followed by burial at 4pm at the General Cemetery, Kanatte.
